GENERAL

How do I submit a helpdesk ticket?

Visit the helpdesk page at:

Create a support portal account:
1. Visit the helpdesk page. 
2. On the bottom locate that link that says “Create Support Portal Account.” 
3. Create a username and password (you may use the same one that you use for your computer). 
4. Be certain that you put in your e-mail address and full name below.
5. Click submit

Submit a helpdesk ticket:
Visit the helpdesk whenever you have a computer problem. Type out a description of your problem, being as thorough as possible. Please be certain to select the appropriate department when submitting a ticket. Rate your ticket’s importance but do not use emergency unless it is truly an emergency.

When to submit a ticket:
Please submit a helpdesk ticket for all technology problems. When in doubt, submit a ticket. The technology department reviews ALL tickets and will respond as quickly as they are able. Please be patient.

What do I do if my computer locks up? 

First try pressing ctrl, alt, and delete keys in that order, holding them down as you press them and then releasing once all three keys are pressed.  This should bring up the "Windows Security" window.  Select "task manager" and check the applications tab.  You may see an application with the words (not responding) beside it.  Select this application with your mouse and then hit "end task."  If ctrl-alt-delete does not allow you to enter this tab and the computer simply stays frozen for longer than 5 minutes, hold down your power button on the computer for 10 seconds until the computer shuts off.  Turn the computer back on and allow it to boot normally.  If this error occurs more than once, submit a ticket to the Help Desk or contact a technician. 

Is it safe to leave my computer on at night?

Yes.  It is not harmful to leave the computer running all night.  It is also ok to shut it off.  The only advantage to leaving it on is that the computer will come up much faster in the morning.  Your computer should be rebooted or shut down at least once a week to avoid performance degradation

How do I copy and paste text into different applications?

There are several ways to copy and paste text into different applications.  First you must select the text you wish to copy.  Once the text is selected you may do one of the three following methods to cut and paste.

1. Look for the programs "edit menu" and find the copy feature.  Insert the cursor where you wish to paste.  Browse to the edit menu and select the copy feature.
2. Right click on the selected text and a popup should appear.  Choose copy.  Insert the cursor.  Right click again and choose paste.
3. Hold your ctrl key and hit c.  Insert the cursor.  Hold your ctrl key and hit v.

What do I do if my computer is acting slow?

Log out of your computer and shut it down all the way.  Turn it back on.  If your computer continues to act slow, contact a technician.

Why can't I log in to my computer?

Bad Username or Password
If you attempt to log in and get a message that your username or password is invalid, verify that your username is typed correctly with no spaces on either side of it.  Also verify that your password is typed in correctly and that your capslock key is not on.  Hit the "options" button on the log in screen and make sure that the bottom box "log on to" points to Commissioners. 

Security Log Full, Domain Unavailable or Account is Locked
If you receive a message stating that your security log is full, your domain is unavailable, or your account is locked, contact a technician.

E-MAIL

What do I do if I receive a message saying I am over my mailbox size limit?

Your limit is currently 40 megabytes.  If you receive a message stating that you can not send or receive mail because you are over your size limit you must delete e-mails until you go below this limit.  Make sure that your trashbin is emptyed and check whether you want to keep your sent items because both of these count against your limit. To check the current size of your mailbox follow the following steps:

1. Open outlook.  Locate the main Mailbox folder on the left side in the area called "All Mail Folders" that contains a list of your folders.  The topmost folder will be called Mailbox - John Doe for example.  Right click on this.
2. Browse the menu that pops up and left click once on properties.
3. Locate the button on the "Outlook Today" screen labeled "Folder Size." Left click once.
4. Look at the total size.  If the number is larger than 40000 Kb, then you are over your limit.  You can view each folders size on the list. 


Should I be concerned about viruses in my e-mail?

While there is virus protection in place and the majority of viruses are caught before they get to you, caution should still be used when opening attachments.  Use common sense and avoid opening attachments you were not expecting or that arrive from unknown senders.

Can I check my e-mail from home?

Yes.  You will need to have an available internet connection at home.  Open your internet browswer and type http://www.docogonet.com/exchange/ in the address bar.  When the page begins to load you will be prompted to log in.  Your username is the same as it would be to log into your computer at work with an added prefix of commissioners\ placed directly in front of your username with no spaces.  Your password will be the same as it is at work.  So if John Doe with a password of matchbox was to log he would enter his information as follows:
username: commissioners\jdoe
password: matchbox

INTERNET ACCESS

What do I do if I can't get to the web?

First verify if you are the only one having the problem.  If you are, try rebooting your computer.  If other people are having the same difficulty or rebooting does not fix the problem, contact a technician.

What do I do if I see inappropriate web content being viewed?

Dorchester County has policies about what subject matter is appropriate for being viewed at work.  If you see someone viewing content that you find offensive or inappropriate for the work environment, please contact a technician or a department head so that they may notify the appropriate people.  If you are unsure about what is appropriate you may request a copy of the internet acceptable use policy from the human resources department.
